Martin started taekwondo at 17 years of age, after many years of being fascinated by Asian culture including martial arts. But living in a small town in Sweden, there were no martial arts classes, so like most of the other boys his age, Martin focused on soccer instead.

What triggered him starting? He was robbed at the bus stop when he was 16 years old. “It was not a violent robbery, I was boxed into a bus shelter and demanded to hand over my wallet. But I froze and felt defenceless, and later said to myself, ‘I do not want to feel like that ever again.’ So, a few months later, I signed up for my first martial arts class,” says Martin.

Martin chose Taekwondo because it had a lot of competitions available. “It also looked impressive!” Initially Martin started in the ITF style, before switching to WTF six months later, preferring the more sparring-oriented approach.

After seven years of training, Martin achieved his black belt in October 1998. Between 1997 and 1999, Martin escalated his training to six days a week in an attempt to make the Swedish team for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. While he did not make the team, he still came to Australia, moving here in November 1999 to start university instead.

It is this need to dedicate time to your training that Martin regularly reinforces for students. “Simply attending classes isn’t enough. You have to put in a lot of hard work to become a decent martial artist.” Martin also recognises that there are times in life when you can’t give your practice the time, and that’s ok. In fact, he has taken two substantial training breaks during his time as a martial artist, the first in 1995when he travelled around Australia and Indonesia for a year, and the second, longer break between 2000 and 2007 when he came to Australia for university. “I always knew I was coming back, but I needed to prioritise my studies and career at the time. I came back to Taekwondo in 2007 at Spirit and have not looked back since,” says Martin.

Professionally, Martin works in IT as a database administrator and in PHP development and integration. He holds the dream of one day travelling the world on a sailboat looking for surf, his other great passion in life.
